Students from Mrs. Margiasso’s Kindergarten class and Miss Prinz’s 5th grade class collaborated to work on the topic of Space. Students in Miss Prinz’s 5th grade class have been learning all about space and the different planets in the solar system. Throughout the last couple of weeks, the students have been researching two planets of their choice. Students had to take their findings and put the information onto banners as well as mini booklets to share with the Kindergarten class. After researching, the students in Miss. Prinz’s class then had to create a paper mache replica of their planet to share with Mrs. Margiasso’s Kindergarteners. In order to prepare for their visit to Miss Prinz’s fifth grade class Mrs. Margiasso’s kindergarten class was introduced to the theme of space the week prior. Everyday the class did a different read aloud that went along with the theme of space and the solar system. During the collaboration, Mrs. Margassio’s Kindergarten class came to sit in Miss Prinz’s 5th grade class and listened to each group present about their planets. Each group went to the front of the class with their banner, booklets, and one paper mache model of their planet. A member of each group presented facts about their planet and explained to the Kindergarteners how they made their paper mache planet. A member from each group also passed around their mini booklet that they made for the kindergarteners to be able to flip through during their presentations. Both classes were super engaged and excited throughout the presentation. This project and collaboration was a great implementation of our P2 traits of open-mindedness and teamwork for each class!

MS Students of the Month September
For the past few weeks, Miss Wagor’s 5th grade class has been reading several science texts and working to determine the central idea and key details of each text. Students began with a short excerpt on the moon, followed by a lesson on identifying constellations. The scholars had the opportunity to create their own constellations with spaghetti and marshmallows. Next, students read how Pluto stopped being a planet. Students identified a key detail to support this claim, such as how a planet has to clear its neighborhood of smaller objects around its orbit to be considered a planet, which Pluto failed to do. Lastly, students read about how stars explode and included details leading up to the event. In conclusion, students were assigned a planet and a group where they conducted research on their planet. Then, they each created their own paper mache planets with flour, newspaper, water, paint, and hot glue!

CDHS students in Mrs. Jones' math classes have been hard at work in activities like "Speed Dating", a college math prep session. One student would be tasked with solving an Absolute Value Equation (graphically and algebraically) question and then they would become the master of that question. As the students "Speed Dated", they exchanged their questions with the student across from them and assisted them while they both are solving problems and answering any questions. Additionally, students participated in a bounce-around activity where they solved questions hanging on the wall.
