4th grade students at Cairo-Durham Elementary School recently had the unique opportunity to conduct the dissection of squids!

April 30, 2024 Dear Cairo-Durham Central School District Families, I am writing to you today to inform you that school will be closed on Friday, May 24, 2024 through Tuesday, May 28, 2024. With a mild winter leading to a limited use of snow days, the District is able to lengthen the Memorial Day weekend. We hope the extended weekend, with Memorial Day on Monday, May 27, 2024, will find students and staff refreshed for the final stretch of the 2023-24 school year when they return on Wednesday, May 29, 2024. The students in the Thompson/Lopez and Whitbeck/Lopez classes recently celebrated Earth Day on April 22, 2024, with an increased focused on the appreciation of beauty and excellence for the Positivity Project. The classes enthusiastically researched and discussed reasons why it is extremely important to take care of our environment and specific ways we can all care for the Earth and make it more beautiful. The students also discussed a variety of environmental agencies that exist in order to protect the Earth. They learned that within these agencies, there are a variety of professionals who have unique interests, specialized training, and specific experiences regarding the environment. The classes acknowledged the excellence these individuals demonstrate each day as they fulfill their vital roles as environmentalists. The students viewed the Scenic Hudson website and later wrote personalized letters to several of the Scenic Hudson staff members in order to thank them for their dedication and excellence. These letters were delivered to the Executive Team and others by Mr. Lopez, who is the current Executive Director of Science, Advocacy, and Policy for Scenic Hudson. Thank you, Scenic Hudson, and to all of those incredible professionals and volunteers who spend time each day protecting our Earth!

Cairo-Durham Elementary School Families! The deadline to purchase a 2023-24 Yearbook for Cairo-Durham Elementary School is Friday, May 3, 2024! To purchase and customize a yearbook, (must be a parent or student 13 years or older) please follow the instructions in the attachment!

Attention Prospective 2024-25 Pre-Kindergarten Families: The lottery drawing for full-day Pre-K for the 2024-25 school year will take place on May 21 at 10 a.m. Completed registration packets to be included in the lottery drawing are due to the Elementary School Main Office by May 20, 2024 at noon. Only 18 full-day slots are available for the 2024-25 school year. The drawing can be viewed live online or parents/guardians are welcome to attend in person. The District is still accepting half-day AM/PM Pre-K applications, as well. Those applications will be accepted until all slots are filled. Congratulations to Cairo-Durham High School Digital Photography student Emily Moon for taking home TWO awards at the Capital Region Media Arts Festival on April 23, 2024! Her photos titled, "Red Meets Blue" and "Schizophrenia" were recognized for her skills demonstrated in the categories of "Abstraction" and "Special Photographic Processes". In addition, the following Cairo-Durham High School Media Arts students also had their artwork selected for this exhibit: Jessica Baeckmann, Elexandreah Desmarais, Hanna Budz. Abby Hartmann, Jeremiah Newkirk, Aishwarya Thakur and Sam Winig. Their work was selected by a panel of Capital Region art educators and then adjudicated by art professionals. Congratulations, Mustangs!

Save the dates! The New York State ELA and Math exams are around the corner. Students in grades 3-8 will take the ELA exam on April 30-May 1, 2024 and the Math exam on May 14-15, 2024. On April 24, 2024, Cairo-Durham High School students Emma Kargoe, Colin MacGiffert and Tashana James and Cairo-Durham High School music teacher Sarah Clermont were recognized at the Capital District YMCA Student and Educator Breakfast at Pegasus in Coxsackie! The students and Ms. Clermont, along with the other Greene County school district recipients, were honored for their achievements inside and outside of the classroom. Representing Cairo-Durham Central School District, Superintendent Michael Wetherbee and Cairo-Durham High School Principal Catherine Dodig attended the event and are extremely proud of our Mustangs!
