CAIRO, NY – The Cairo-Durham Central School District is excited to announce that Steven Nilsen has started as the second Assistant Principal at the Cairo-Durham Middle and High School, as of May 5, 2025.

Mr. Nilsen lives in Gardiner, NY, right outside of New Paltz, NY. Steven earned his Bachelor's in Physical Education from the Sage College in Albany. Seeking further education, he obtained a Master's in Educational Leadership from WGU. One of his motivations to pursue a career in education was his sister, who provided both motivation and mentorship.

“I decided to go into education because of my sister.  She saw that I would be great at it and pushed me to obtain my dream of being in the education field,” said Steven.  “She has been a great mentor to me and helped guide me through my educational journey.”

Almost 13 years ago, Mr. Nilsen started his educational career as a Physical Education teacher at Hyde Park CSD. He served the students of that district for 10 and a half years. Shortly after, Fallsburg CSD took him on as their assistant principal, where he stayed for 2 years. He now excitedly joins us at the Cairo-Durham Middle/High School!

“I believe the most exciting part of having the opportunity to be an Assistant Principal is the relationships that you can build with students and staff,” said Mr. Steven Nilsen.

“We’re thrilled to have another talented and eager administrator at the middle and high school campus,” said Superintendent Mr. Michael Wetherbee.
