Letter on Swatting Calls

March 30, 2023

Dear Cairo-Durham Families and Staff,

Today, several school districts in the Capital Region and surrounding areas received what is believed to be swatting phone calls indicating an active shooter at their school today. In response, law enforcement immediately advised these schools to implement their lockdown procedures during the investigation.

Swatting incidents are threats made to schools with the purpose of triggering a police response and creating fear and panic. Several states across the U.S. have experienced similar mass swatting attempts in recent months.

While the Cairo-Durham Central School District has not received a direct threat, we know many of our families, students, and staff are understandably concerned about school safety. Please know that the health, safety and well-being of our students and staff are a priority. We take all reports of potential threats seriously and are working diligently with law enforcement on this matter.

Our local law enforcement agencies have been notified and are working in collaboration with the district.

We encourage our school community to report anything out of the ordinary to law enforcement. We will update you when we receive more information. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Sincerely,

Michael Wetherbee

Superintendent of Schools
