Chromebook Insurance & Damage Information

Background

As part of your student’s education, Cairo-Durham Central School District is providing a laptop computer for his/her individual use through the Connected Classroom initiative. The student computers--which are managed much like textbooks--are purchased by the district, remain the property of the district, and are collected at the end of every school year.

The Chromebook laptop will be assigned at the start of the school year, collected at the end of the year, and returned to your student (or replaced) at the beginning of the following school year.

The laptop and accessories must be returned in good working order at the end of the school year. If you move out of the district during the year, devices must be returned to the school before your child's last day. Some wear-and-tear is reasonable and expected, however, if the equipment is not returned or if it has been severely damaged, the district may bill the family for repairs and/or replacement as needed (see below).

Insurance Policies

Through a partnership with the Worth Ave Group, the district has purchased insurance for accidental damage or loss/theft of nearly all district Chromebooks.* While there is no upfront cost required on your part, severe or repeated damage or loss of laptop devices may result in a bill to the family for repair or replacement, just as a destroyed textbook would.

Please read the information below for details about the insurance policy, including what is and is not covered as well as how to report damaged or lost devices.

*This applies to Chromebook devices that are removed from campus, with the exception of 6th Grade devices that remain on campus for half the school year. However, 6th Grade devices will still follow the repair cost guidelines outlined below.

What Is (And Is Not) Covered By Insurance

Our insurance policies through the Worth Ave Group cover the following damage:

  • Accidental damage (includes drops, cracked screens, liquid spills, etc.)

  • Liquid submersion

  • Fire/flood damage

  • Natural disasters

  • Power surge due to lightning

  • Vandalism

  • Theft

  • Manufacture defects/mechanical failure

Insurance does not cover intentional damage of your own laptop. All damage, whether it is covered by insurance or not, must be reported to the school. The procedure for reporting damage, loss, and/or theft of devices is outlined below.

Estimated Repair Costs

The estimated cost to the family for repairs is as follows:

Estimated Repair Costs:First repair $0, Second repair Up to $50 (dependent on type/extent of damage) Third repair or severe damage Up to the full cost of replacement device *Manufacturing defects in first year covered under warranty, if reported

*Actual amount will vary on a case-by-case basis, determined upon review by I.T. and the school administrator. The full cost may vary for different models. Generally, devices cost less than $400.

Note:  After three (3) repairs, the computer must stay on school grounds and will no longer be taken home.

What To Do When Damage, Loss, or Theft Occurs

If accidental damage, loss, or theft of your student’s Chromebook occurs, it MUST be reported it to the Information Technology (I.T.) Department as soon as possible. They will work with the insurance company to get the device repaired or replaced as quickly as possible so that no learning time is lost.

Once the damage is reported to the I.T. Department, they will review the type and degree of damage (e.g., minor, severe) and work with the insurance company on your behalf. Your school will notify you of necessary repair/replacement costs if any (as outlined above).

In the event that your family needs additional or replacement power cables, you can purchase them for roughly $25-$50 each (depending on the model of the device). Contact the I.T. Department for more information.

The I.T. Department can be contacted at:

  • Email: help@cairodurham.org

  • Phone: 518-622-8543, ext. 59500

  • Or by asking the school office and/or a teacher for assistance

Recovering Lost Devices

The district has tools for recovering devices that are lost or stolen. If a device is reported as lost, the district will activate these tools and work with law enforcement officials to recover the device. If it is recovered, the family will not be charged.

If your student’s device is missing, please report it to the school as soon as you know. Time is very important when recovering lost devices.
