The Cairo-Durham High School Boys Tennis Team won the 2026 NYSPHSAA Section II Class C/D Championship with a 5-2 victory over Maple Hill on Thursday, May 14, 2026.
Led by Coach Pisano and Coach Brooks, the Mustangs came through with a strong team performance to secure the sectional championship title.
Coach Pisano reflected on the significance of the victory and the perseverance the team has demonstrated throughout the season.
“This win is very important to the team,” said Coach Pisano. “We came close last year, but weren't able to capitalize. We had a few issues with players not being able to make a few games early in the season, so for everyone to unify at the end of the season to win sectionals was a huge achievement for us. We stand on the backs of the legacy that Bill Zowoboda built when the school won in 1991 and Dave Gori when we won in 2009.”
The Mustangs’ singles players proved to be the difference, helping the team secure the five victories needed to claim the championship.
“Our singles players all played great to secure the five wins,” Coach Pisano said. “Our No. 1 doubles team fought very hard but lost in a heartbreaking three-set match with two tie breakers in the first two sets.”
Coach Pisano also emphasized the growth and teamwork that defines this year’s team.
“It’s been a pleasure for Coach Brooks and I to coach these players and see their development and growth as athletes and students on and off the court,” he said. “We’re losing six seniors this year so that’s going to be very difficult. Everyone helps out with the new and younger players and has a lot of fun on the bus rides.”
It was a special and memorable moment for the team when they won Thursday night.
“It was surreal,” Coach Pisano added. “It didn't set in until we were presented with the banner, plaque and sectional emblems. Everyone was super excited and there was a lot of fist bumping, handshakes, and an overwhelming sense of camaraderie and team spirit.”
The Cairo-Durham Central School District congratulates the Boys Tennis Team, Coach Pisano, Coach Brooks, and the entire program on an outstanding season and sectional championship victory.
The team will play Glens Falls at a neutral site (TBD) on Tuesday 5/26 at 4:15pm. The format will be two singles and three doubles.
