The Capital District YMCA honored Cairo-Durham students and a teacher for their outstanding and dedicated community contributions at its Student & Educator Breakfast held on May 7 at the Pegasus Restaurant in Coxsackie. Congratulations to CDHS students Andrew Esslie and Alan Lopez-Agustin and CDES teacher Leandra Margiasso.

This annual event serves as a way for the Capital Region YMCA to recognize students and educators for their community service, displaying leadership, and reflecting the organization’s values (caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility). Those who attended were treated to breakfast.

CDHS Senior Andrew Esslie has been active both in the community and in school, wearing many hats as a member of the National Honor Society, the Secretary of the Student Council, an Eagle Scout, an athlete, and a volunteer. Whether it’s a weekend or weeknight, you’ll find him volunteering, including his recent achievements at the CDHS Quiz Night and an Eagle Scout project at the Cairo reservoir.

CDHS Senior Alan Lopez-Agustin has shown his dedication to community service and mirrors the YMCA’s values. An elementary carnival, a senior citizens dinner, and NHS participation are some ways he has given back to the community. He is also a multi-talented athlete and actor, playing sports like volleyball, tennis, and soccer, as well as performing in three musicals.

Leandra Margiasso, CDES teacher, has exemplified excellence in education. As a Kindergarten teacher, she not only cares for her students but continues to excel in other areas, such as participating in the Guiding Coalition team, leading the student broadcast, and continuing her professional development (with over 450 hours). She has also been involved with the Hudson Valley Little League for the past 15 years, with roles ranging from board member to coach.

“The YMCA would like to thank you for all you have done in your communities. You may not realize the importance of your efforts, but those that you have impacted will always be thankful,” the Capital District YMCA said in their event pamphlet.

Also in attendance and support of the honorees were Superintendent Mr. Michael Wetherbee, CDES Principal Christopher Stein, and CDMS/HS Principal Catherine Dodig.
