Cairo Durham High School will be participating in a Unified Sports program this spring. The program is being sponsored by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) and Special Olympics New York. Unified Sports is an inclusive sports program that combines an approximately equal number of athletes (students with intellectual disabilities) and partners (students without intellectual disabilities) on teams for training and competitions. CDHS students can participate in the Spring Unified Basketball program. Tryouts will held at the beginning of April. A key component of the program is the Youth Activation Committee (YAC). The YAC is responsible for helping increase awareness and acceptance of students with disabilities within the school district and by supporting the Unified Basketball team. Several CDHS students and faculty advisors attended the YAC Summit held this past Thursday, January 28th at Saratoga High School. Students met with other participating students and learned more about the program and how they can help promote the team within the student body and community. Here we see CDHS student Eduardo Gomez along with a faculty advisor discussing the program.
