Superintendent Update on COVID-19 Response (Mar. 14)

Superintendent Wetherbee issued the following update on the District's plan regarding the ongoing public health crisis:

TO: Cairo-Durham Central School Community
FROM: Michael J. Wetherbee, Superintendent of Schools
RE: COVID-19 Update
DATE: March 14, 2020

The health and safety of our students and staff is our top priority. As many schools in the surrounding area close due to confirmed cases of COVID-19, it is important to note that as of yesterday there were no confirmed cases in our school community. If the District becomes aware that a student or staff member is diagnosed with COVID-19, we will take appropriate action and notify the school community immediately. Today, regional superintendents and county officials from the Department of Health participated in a meeting at our local BOCES (Questar III) to discuss school closures. Superintendents and Questar officials will meet again on Sunday. An additional notification will be distributed tomorrow.

To prepare for a possible closure, our District has spent time this past week to plan for educating our students remotely. I am appreciative of the work and dedication to do what is best for our students. We discussed different platforms and the value of combining both written packets and online sources as ways to continue educating our students. Teachers are committed to sharing a variety of resources for parent-guided and self-guided learning for students. Additional planning will continue in order to address students who are not able to access the internet from home. We are also exploring the best way to maintain our school breakfast and lunch program during a possible prolonged closure. It is important to acknowledge how quickly this situation is evolving and that there are practical limitations to maintaining continuity in instructional programming during an extended school closure. We appreciate your understanding and patience and will notify you of updates as soon as we are able.
