Message from Superintendent Taibi

Dear Families,

We want to make you aware of a situation that occurred on November 28, 2018, at the Middle/High School. At no time were students in any danger, however, we feel it is important to inform the community of the incident and to remind parents of our District policies.

On Wednesday, November 28, at roughly 2:10 p.m., a student reported to administrators that there was a firearm in a car in the parking lot of the Middle/High School. School administrators, along with the school resource officer, immediately investigated and located a hunting rifle in a vehicle, just as the student had described. At the very same time the firearm was located, a parent picking up their child from school, returned to this vehicle to leave. The parent confirmed ownership of the firearm and it was determined by the school resource officer that it was brought on to campus by mistake. Law enforcement is now handling the issue with the owner of the firearm.

While we do realize we live in a community where hunting is common this time of year, we want to take this opportunity to remind families that firearms of any kind are never permitted on any school grounds, including in any vehicle that enters school property.

Please know that the safety of our students and staff is of the utmost importance at Cairo-Durham CSD. We are grateful to the student who did the right thing by coming forward to report the situation. We ask that you please reinforce with your children the importance of reporting any suspicious activity to an adult as soon as possible. If you have any questions or concerns the district office at 518-622-8534.
