The New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports (NYSSCOGS) named CDHS junior Hannah Esslie to the girls soccer all-state team for the 2020 Fall I season. Esslie is one of only two all-state selections from regional Section 2 Class B schools.
Esslie, who plays midfield on the girls varsity soccer team, was also recognized as a Patroon Conference All-Star (first team) for this season along with her teammate, senior Xxaria Makely.
“Both are very prestigious honors,” said Cairo-Durham Athletic Director Greg Hagan.
“It is really exciting to receive the all-state recognition because I have always wanted to achieve it but was not expecting it,” said Esslie. “It is rewarding to be recognized by the sports reporters who cover high school soccer.”
During this season, Esslie had a great impact on the varsity soccer team.
“She played almost every minute of every game, and her ability to see the field along with excellent ball control made her a threat from anywhere,” said Samantha Spohler, who coaches girls varsity soccer at CDHS.
“Not only was she able to find the open player, she was able to find the back of the net also. Hannah led the Lady Mustangs in both goals and assists, finishing the year with 11 goals and five assists,” Spohler continued. “I am excited to see what she can accomplish in her senior season next year."
After playing soccer since seventh grade, Esslie has a bit of advice for young athletes: “Keep working, keep practicing and be patient. You might not see your skills improve in just one day but if you keep it up the results will be rewarding.”
