Sixth grade student Kaylan Rennig was announced the winner of the Scholastic Storyworks Magazine Create-A-Character contest. The national contest requires students to develop a new character for a Young Adult (YA) author to write a story around. YA author Lauren Magaziner hand-picked Kaylan’s character from more than 1,000 entries.

The character, Veronica, was based on Kaylan’s experiences visiting her grandparents’ log cabin in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, where Kaylan enjoys seeing all different types of wildlife. While creating Veronica, Kaylan said she wanted to incorporate her experiences as well as the real-world problem of preserving the environment.

Magaziner’s story featuring Kaylan’s character, Veronica, will appear in the May/June 2019 issue of Storyworks Magazine.

In addition to having her character featured in a published story, Kaylan and her Reading/Writing class will receive autographed copies of Magaziner’s YA novel, Case Closed: Mystery in the Mansion.
