Cairo-Durham Middle School consists of about 460 students, grades 6-8, who are preparing for the increased academic rigor of high school. Faculty, sensitive to this critical time in students' lives, begin work with students relating to their college and career selections. As part of Project Lead the Way, middle school students are exposed to careers.

Transition to High School

This meeting is for all 8th graders and their parents. MS and HS counselors will be on hand to talk about and answer questions regarding the transition process into high school. The meeting will be held on Thursday, March 4 from 6:30-7:30 in the auditorium. See you there!!


Cairo-Durham Spelling Bee Winner Headed to Regional Competition

On Friday, February 5th, a total of 30 students from Cairo-Durham CSD competed for the title of top speller at their annual spelling bee. Students in grades five through eight participated in the event. To qualify as a semi-finalist each of these students first won his/her classroom bee.

Congratulations to this year’s winner, eighth grade student, Sean Feeney! Sean will represent Cairo-Durham CSD at the 28th annual Capital Region Spelling Bee. This year’s runner up is sixth grade student Dan Wilcox. Congratulations Dan!


Tech Valley Applications

Tech Valley High School applications are now available in the MS Guidance Office. An 8th grader interested in more information about attending there next year should contact the guidance dept. at 622-0490 extension 4310.

Middle School Students Participate in Red Ribbon Week

During National Red Ribbon Week students in grades six through eight participated in activities to raise awareness for alcohol, tobacco and drug violence and prevention. Red Ribbon Week provides a fun and interactive way for young people to learn how to make good decisions regarding the use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs. On “Use Your Head, Wear Red” day students and teachers dressed in red and the cafeteria served red foods including spaghetti and meatballs, apples and jello. On “Living Drug Free is No Sweat!” and “Use Your Head and Roll out of Bed!” day students came to school wearing their favorite sweatpants, slippers or pajamas.


Middle School Celebrates Veterans’ Day

Cairo-Durham Middle School held its annual Veterans’ Day Celebration on November 9th. The event began with the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of our National Anthem. Students then presented songs, poems, dances and a musical performance to local Veterans and their families. To end the celebration students presented a photo collage filled with pictures of local Veterans including their family and friends. Guests and everyone involved in the assembly were thanked with a reception in the high school cafeteria after the presentation.
